In the late fall of 2013, the American Pilgrims on the Camino put out a call to the membership to see if anyone would be interested in volunteering in the Pilgrims Office in Santiago de Compostela for a two week gig. Airfare and daily expenses would be on the volunteer, the housing would be on the Pilgrims Office. It sounded too good to be true.
I applied, was accepted, and spent nearly three weeks in Spain in July 2014, greeting pilgrims as they came in and helping to organize the queue into the office. I met lovely people from all over the world and made at least two lifelong friends in the process.
I’ll be posting photos and stories here to give you an idea of my experiences and to allow me the guilty pleasure of reminiscing about those days in Santiago de Compostela.
N.B. The volunteer program has been suspended due, in part, to the move of the pilgrims office from Rua Vilar to its new location just past the parador.
I look forward to seeing your photos and reading your stories. I’ve heard that there is a new pilgrim office being built in Santiago, so the Amigo volunteer program is suspended until further notice. Is that correct?

I’ve got a note out to my contact at American Pilgrims to see what they know. I can’t wait to hear how this program will develop. It was such a gratifying experience.
